Netflix is a great. It’s the perfect medium for being entertained and turning off our brains for awhile. However, it’s also a place where we can educate ourselves through documentaries. A well-made documentary can lead to profound shifts in the way we perceive the world. This is why I would like to share with you some documentaries I’ve come across on Netflix, that I think are important to watch. These documentaries discuss how our society became so unhealthy and will both enrage and inspire you. Here are 4 Netflix documentaries you NEED to watch.
Sugar Coated investigates how the sugar industry has affected our society and our health. Essentially, the sugar industry is the tobacco industry of the 21st century. Not only are they denying the negative health effects that their sugar filled food products have on us, but they are literally using the exact same tactics that the tobacco companies did back in 60’s to avoid prosecution.
Fed up breaks down the sugar industry and the immense power they have over our politics and government. They also add some personal stories in which they follow around four obese American children who are trying to lose weight. They show how difficult it is to lose weight with the current school lunch programs where french fries and pizza are considered vegetables.
Terra is a beautifully shot film which first shows us how truly amazing and interconnected all bugs, plants and animals are on our planet. Unfortunately, this is just a set up for the brutally harsh reality of what humans are doing to the earth. The second half of the film shows us the environmental costs of our oil, agricultural and factory farming systems.
Cooked is an amazing four part series which profiles the four elements in which we cook with – fire, water, air and earth. This series shows us the very origins of how we’ve used these elements for cooking and how they have evolved up until today. This documentary does an excellent job at inspiring you to start cooking for yourself again.
After I watched these documentaries, I truly felt like I had a more accurate understanding of how our health as a society has become so deteriorated. Once we are aware that there are industries out there that don’t have our best interests in mind, they are much easier to avoid and hopefully change in the future.
